Prostitution in Thailand
On Friday the 7th of October, the 5th period, we, T3A, had our weakly RE lesson. But this time it was different from usual. This was because we had a special guest, who came here today to teach us about the prostitution in Thailand.
A while after the lesson had started, this woman introduced herself on a rather notable way, namely in Thai. We, of course, were surprised, but knew from this moment on this may be an really interesting lesson. And so we wondered why she could speak Thai that good. Very soon we found out the answer, she namely has lived in Thailand for 11 years, to work there as helper of an organization. This Christian organization is called ‘Tamar Centre’ and does a lot for women who work as a prostitute. Their sense is to give these young women a second change to build up there life, and go out of this prostitution business. But to reach that goal, they have to help them. Tamar Centre does this on many different ways; they visit them, they give them free (English) classes and courses, they have many activities for these women, so they can exercise certain professions, and of course they offer them jobs, other jobs than working in ‘Pattaya’ (famous prostitution city in Thailand, mainly visited by tourists). While this progress is going on, these beautiful women start to feel appreciated and realise they aren’t valueless as they thought they were. And when on the end one of these women decides to go out of the prostitution and work for an other job, it’s one women less in prostitution, and Tamar Centre feels like one step further.
The presentation was informative and really not boring, we all came to know how people over there think, and why they do such things. Finally I think, the idea I had at the beginning came actually true, because it was indeed a really interesting lesson.
